Resistant Drywall Options

Understanding Moisture Resistance in Walls

Moisture is inevitable in walls, but excessive moisture can lead to structural damage and mold growth. Resistant drywall options offer enhanced protection against moisture intrusion, ensuring a healthy and durable indoor environment.

Types of Resistant Drywall

Greenboard

  • Water-resistant paper face
  • Suitable for moderate moisture areas (e.g., showers without direct water spray)

Purpleboard

  • Moisture and mold-resistant paper face and gypsum core
  • Ideal for higher moisture areas (e.g., kitchens, bathrooms, basements)

Cement Board

  • Made of Portland cement and cellulose fiber
  • Highly water and mold-resistant
  • Used in areas with extreme moisture exposure (e.g., showers, steam rooms)

How to Choose the Right Resistant Drywall

The type of resistant drywall to choose depends on the intended use and moisture level of the area. For moderate moisture areas, greenboard is adequate. For higher moisture areas, purpleboard or cement board is recommended.

How Much Moisture is OK in Walls?

Moisture content in walls should be kept below 5%. Higher moisture levels can promote mold growth and damage the structure. Use a moisture meter to monitor moisture levels and take appropriate measures to mitigate excess moisture.
